Historically, OLA has undertaken future planning initiatives which have resulted in vision plan documents like Vision 2020 to be published every ten years.
Currently, the OLA Board is planning for OLA's future through annual strategic planning activities, which includes a review of mission and vision statements. OLA may return to decennial planning initiatives in the future.
OLA Vision 2020 Task ForceOn December 10, the first meeting of the Vision 2020 Committee kicked off the process for this futuristic planning effort that OLA engages in every 10 years. Provocative discussion and interesting metaphors arose at this first meeting — the planning effort was characterized as an attempt to get all types of libraries on the same page about the future of library services — Vision 2020 will be the page to stand on. Remaining relevant together was put forth as a unifying concept. “What will free be worth in 2020?” was a question asked. You will be hearing more about Vision 2020’s inclusive input processes which will entail electronic and in-person methodologies. The Vision 2020 chair is Teresa Landers, Deputy Director at Corvallis-Benton County Library, with assistance from Anne-Marie Deitering, OLA Member-at-Large and Undergraduate Learning Initiatives Librarian at Valley Library, OSU. I’m pleased to announce the full committee representing school, public, academic, special, metro, suburban, rural, Eastern, Central, Southern, and Valley libraries and professional and paraprofessional library staff. With the support of boards and bosses they responded to the invitation to serve and stepped up for subcommittee assignments too!
